Chapter 16: Discussions with Weatherstone

When Weatherstone went into the dining room with Darcy and the others, he could not help but notice that Elizabeth gave the servants the orders about serving lunch. After she had sent one of the servants off for more wine, he said, “Excuse my inquisitiveness, but is it not rather unusual that Miss Elizabeth is directing the serving staff?”

“Not at all,” said Georgiana. “The day she arrived, it was decided that she, as the senior female present, should act as mistress. And she has been doing exceptionally well, has she not, Will?”

“That she has. We have had some excellent meals of a character we would not have had, had she not taken charge. She soon won over the staff, and they have gone out of their way to ensure she does well. Is that not true, Miss Elizabeth?”

“They have. They have made my assumed role quite easy and rewarding. May I ask, Lord Weatherstone, how long are you expecting to stay?”

“I had only planned to stay overnight, but,” and he turned to Darcy, “would you mind if I stayed a day or two longer?”

“Let me ask the mistress. May he stay a day or two longer?”

“I think you are carrying this too far, Mr. Darcy. I may be acting mistress, but I am still just a guest. It is up to you to approve his request.”

“But may I assume you would be happy if I approved?”

“I would enjoy adding him to our party.”

“Good. Then consider yourself invited to stay a few days, Weatherstone. Although you must be gone before my family begins to arrive on the 18th of December.”

“I would guess the Bennets do not know what a good singer you are, Daniel,” said Georgiana. “You must be willing to perform with us during the evenings you are here.”

“As you know, I will be happy to do so, and, Miss Elizabeth, as I remember, one of your sisters told me you are an excellent singer. Will you sing a duet or two with me?”

“If you desire, although I may not be the caliber of singer with whom you usually sing.”

“Do not let her discourage you, Daniel,” said Georgiana. “She is an excellent singer. I am sure you will greatly enjoy singing with her. She even knows songs in several languages. You may be able to sing in another language together.”

During the remainder of the discussion, as they ate their dessert, Weatherstone learned the musical talents of Mary and Kitty and was also told of Kitty’s talent as a sketch and watercolors artist. Immediately after lunch, he demanded he be shown some of her drawing and watercolors and was overwhelmed at their quality.

At 2:30, when the men went to the billiards room to play billiards, Kitty, Georgie, and Mary went to the library to study. However, Elizabeth did not go with them, because Dr. Stewart, who had been called away from the table because one of the tenant children had been brought in with a major injury, sent a maid up to ask her if she would be willing to help him.
